This Gluten-free Garlic Bread is the perfect Italian side dish! It’s slathered with a mix of butter, garlic, Italian seasonings, parmesan and baked until golden brown to give you the best gluten-free garlic bread recipe. Make it in under 15-minutes to soak up every last drop of sauce in all of your Italian pasta dishes.

If you didn’t think garlicky delicious garlic bread could be a part of a gluten-free diet, then I’m here to make your day!

Not only is it possible, but I’d be willing to bet most people who bite into a piece won’t even know it’s gluten-free. Yep, it’s been tested! Everyone loves this recipe for gluten-free garlic bread.

It goes perfectly with gluten-free baked ziti, gluten-free fettuccine alfredo, or gluten free risotto – but my favorite is to use a piece to soak up every last drop of Sunday Sauce. We’ve even made a delicious Italian sandwich using gluten-free meatballs, fresh mozzarella, and gluten-free garlic bread. Or cut into breadsticks and dip in gluten free marinara sauce!

    Reasons you’ll love this recipe

    • It’s better and cheaper than the store-bought brands, and I’ve tried them all.
    • It is easy to make and comes together in about 15 minutes.
    • Everybody loves it! Trust me; people will be fighting over the crumbs!

    Ingredients

ingredients to make gluten-free garlic bread
    • Salted butter. You’ll need one stick of butter; hey, I didn’t say this was a low-fat recipe! Make sure to get salted because, with unsalted, you’ll lose flavor. If you only have unsalted butter then use a teaspoon of salt in with the butter mixture.
    • Fresh garlic & garlic powder. I prefer to finely mince one garlic clove and also add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder; this infuses delicious garlic flavor into the butter while also giving the bread specks of garlic.
    • Dried basil, dried oregano, and dried parsley. Many gluten-free garlic bread recipes use fresh herbs, and you certainly can, but I make this bread a lot and don’t always have fresh herbs. But I always have dried herbs, so that’s what I decided to share in this recipe. If you use fresh herbs then use 1-2 tablespoons of fresh parsley or your favorite Italian herbs. A teaspoon of this homemade Italian seasoning is delicious too.
    • Grated parmesan is the secret ingredient with this homemade garlic bread. Adding freshly grated parmesan cheese gives the garlic butter spread a layer of cheesiness that’s scrumptious.
    • Gluten-free bread. Schar’s Ciabatta rolls or baguette bread are garlic bread’s best gluten-free bread options. Both create a crusty texture on the outside and are soft and chewy inside.

    Supplies

    • Small mixing bowl
    • Large baking sheets

How to Make Gluten-free Garlic Bread

step by step collage showing how to make gluten-free garlic bread
    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
    • Start by mixing the butter, minced garlic, garlic powder, spices, and parmesan cheese in a small bowl.
    • Slice the baguettes or ciabatta bread and lay them on a baking sheet. If you want, lay down parchment paper or foil for easier clean-up. If using Ciabatta bread, then cut four rolls in half to give you a total of 8 pieces of garlic bread.
    • Spread the garlic butter on the bread halves.
    • Bake the garlic bread for 8-10 minutes or until the bread, is golden and crispy.

    Cooking Tips & Substitutions

You don’t have to do this, but if you can, make the butter mixture a day before. The extra time allows the garlic to work its magic and all of the flavors to meld.

For the spices, garlic, and cheese to mix evenly, it’s important to start with room-temperature butter that’s softened. If you make this ahead of time, then let it sit out for 20 minutes or so until it’s soft and easy to spread on the bread.

If you don’t want to use fresh garlic, swap in 2 teaspoons of garlic powder. Season the garlic to your taste.

Make a cheesy garlic bread by sprinkling freshly shredded mozzarella cheese before baking. After it bakes, put it under the broiler for a minute to brown the cheese a bit and give it a more crisp top.

If you want to lighten up this gluten-free garlic bread, reduce the amount of garlic butter you spread on the bread before baking it. Put the leftover garlic butter in an airtight container and refrigerator; it can last up to several weeks.

Use this garlic herb butter on everything! Stir it into gluten-free pasta or rice, top steak with it, or use it to saute chicken breast, or brush it on roasted Italian vegetables. You can even make garlic toast!

Make a dairy-free garlic bread using a dairy-free spread like I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter or Earth’s Balance Baking Sticks. Also, leave the parmesan cheese out or swap with nutritional yeast or a dairy-free parmesan alternative.

You can also swap in olive oil for the butter. Mix 1/3 cup olive with the other ingredients, brush it onto the bread and continue with the baking instructions.

You can use any hearty gluten-free bread, my favorite is Schar gluten-free baguettes or Ciabatta rolls. For this recipe, I used Ciabbta because that’s what I had on hand.

    Storage Tips

    In the refrigerator

Store gluten-free garlic bread in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Heat up for 3-5 minutes in a 350-degree oven.

    In the freezer

You can also freeze garlic bread. After it cooks and cools, place the slices into a freezer bag and freeze for 1-2 months. Reheat in a 350-degree oven for 5-7 minutes or until hot.

Or assemble the garlic bread, place it on a small tray or plate, and stick it in the freezer for an hour to flash freeze. After the garlic bread is frozen, put it into a freezer bag and freeze for 1-2 months. Heat in a 350-degree oven for 10 – 15 minutes until hot, golden, and crispy.
