Italian seasoning is a must in every Italian-American pantry, and it’s delicious on everything! I use it to make gluten free Italian dressing, gluten free garlic bread, and in many of my gluten free sauce recipes.
Store-bought Italian seasoning packets were a regular in my pantry not too long ago. I found them convenient to have on hand for whatever Italian recipe I was making.
However, I quickly learned that even the healthiest brands have additives and preservatives in the ingredient list, which often triggered my gluten allergy. So, last year I started to make own spice blends starting with this homemade Italian seasoning mix recipe, and to be honest, I wish I had started making this a long time ago.

Ingredients
What’s in Italian seasoning? Many homemade Italian seasoning recipes include garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, and other spices.
I didn’t want all those extra flavors, so I decided on a simple DIY Italian seasoning recipe inspired by Simply Organic Italian seasoning, my favorite store-bought brand.
Here are the ingredients.
- Dried oregano, dried basil, and dried thyme are the main spices in this recipe, giving the seasoning a bold Italian flavor right away.
- Dried rosemary has a strong flavor often described as woodsy, so you only need a small amount.
- Dried marjoram is a popular Mediterranean spice and is tastes delicious in tomato-based recipes, making it perfect for including in Italian seasoning.
- Dried ground sage is an aromatic spice, and a little goes a long way. Many Italian seasoning recipes don’t include sage, but I think it’s a key ingredient in this delicious seasoning, and I recommend using it.
You can get the exact measurements for each spice on the recipe card.
I strongly suggest purchasing high-quality organic dried spices, which ensures that there are no additives, preservatives, or hidden ingredients containing gluten. I like the Simply Organic brand, but any organic brand should be fine.

Cooking tips
- Making Italian seasoning from scratch is very forgiving, so you’ll still get a tasty blend if you use less spice or remove any dried herbs. I would caution not to use too much of the more pungent spices like sage or rosemary because both could overpower the seasoning. Of course, any changes will change the flavor of the original Italian seasoning mix, but get creative!
- If you want more of a fine spice mix then you can give it a couple pulses in the spice grinder or food processor.
- Add heat to the seasoning by using a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes or ¼ teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper.
- Give the Italian seasoning blend more flavor by stirring in garlic powder or onion powder; one teaspoon is a good amount to use. You can also add a tablespoon of dried minced garlic or onion flakes.

Supplies & Storage
You can store DIY Italian seasoning in 4-ounce or 6-ounce mason jars with a tight-fitting lid. Any glass container or jar with an airtight lid will work. I have reused empty glass spice containers and labeled them so I know what spice blend is there. I prefer glass containers over plastic because it keeps the spices fresh for longer.
Store the Italian seasoning in an airtight container in a cool dark place, or you can store it in the refrigerator. The homemade seasoning will stay fresh for six months or longer, and you’ll know the spices are no longer fresh when they are no longer aromatic.
